What is DTF printing?

With DTF printing, your design is printed onto a special transfer film and then heat-pressed onto the shirt. The result is a vibrant, smooth print with a slightly raised feel that works well for colorful artwork and detailed designs.

DTF vs. screen printing

Both methods can produce great-looking apparel, but they are best suited to different projects. DTF is usually the better choice for detailed artwork, full-color designs, small quantities, one-off shirts, names, numbers, and designs that may include gradients or photographic elements.

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the garment, usually using a separate screen for each color. It is often the better choice for larger quantities, bold designs with solid colors, and projects where long-term wear and cost per shirt are the main priorities.

DTF printing pros

  • Great for full-color artwork, gradients, fine details, and complex designs.
  • Works well for small orders, samples, one-off shirts, and personalized apparel.
  • Supports many colors without requiring a separate screen for each color.
  • Useful for names, numbers, logos, illustrations, and photo-style artwork.
  • Offers a fast, flexible way to produce custom apparel.

DTF printing considerations

  • The print has a smooth, slightly raised feel, especially on large solid designs.
  • It may not be the most economical choice for very large orders with simple artwork.
  • Print longevity depends on the garment, application quality, washing, drying, and regular wear.
  • Large printed areas can feel less breathable than ink printed directly into the fabric.

Screen printing pros

  • Often an excellent value for larger quantities.
  • Known for bold, solid color coverage and dependable long-term wear.
  • Can provide a soft, breathable feel depending on the ink, print style, and garment.
  • Works especially well for simple logos, team shirts, uniforms, events, and repeat orders.

Screen printing considerations

  • Setup can take more time, especially when a design uses multiple colors.
  • Small orders may cost more per shirt because of screen and setup requirements.
  • Highly detailed artwork, gradients, and photo-style designs may require additional preparation.
  • Each color and print location can affect the final price and production process.

Which method is right for your project?

  • Choose DTF for small batches, personalized shirts, detailed artwork, full-color designs, gradients, or quick custom projects.
  • Choose screen printing for larger orders, bold one-to-three-color artwork, uniforms, team apparel, events, and designs intended for frequent long-term wear.

For either method, the best choice depends on your artwork, order quantity, garment, print size, number of print locations, budget, and how the shirts will be used. When cared for properly, both methods can create durable custom apparel. Actual wear life will vary based on the materials, application, washing, drying, and frequency of use.

Recommended care

  • Turn the shirt inside out before washing.
  • Wash in cold or cool water with a mild detergent.
  • Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
  • Air dry when possible, or use low heat.
  • Do not iron directly over the printed design.
